Dr Mattia Bertazzini

Dr Mattia Bertazzini is a Postdoctoral Prize Fellow at the Department of Economics and Nuffield College. He holds an MPhil in Economic and Social History from the University of Oxford and a PhD from the London School of Economics.

His research explores the historical determinants of spatial inequality in Africa, with a specific focus on the effect of Italian investments and policies in former colonial territories. His recent work has looked at the short and long-run impact of transport infrastructure and agricultural settlement in the Horn of Africa and Libya.

A second branch of his work studies the determinants of state formation and human adaptation to environmental change in Southern Mesopotamia between 5000 BCE and present.
