Sheilagh Ogilvie, Chichele Professor of Economic History, delivers the Max Weber Lecture at the European University Institute on 5 June. Professor Ogilvie presents her new book, Controlling Contagion: Epidemics and Institutions from the Black Death to Covid (Princeton, 2025), which analyzes how human societies have for centuries coordinated and innovated to tackle biological shocks – well and badly.
