The Royal Economic Society has announced that Professor Jane Humphries (All Souls) has won the Royal Economic Society Prize for the best article published in The Economic Journal in 2019. Her paper, 'Unreal Wages? Real Income and Economic Growth in England, 1260–1850', co-authored with Professor Jacob Weisdorf (Roma Sapienza), uses a large new dataset of annual wages drawn from archival sources to show that day wages can provide a misleading picture of labour incomes and economic growth. The annual earnings evidence also suggests that modern economic growth began with an 'Industrious Revolution' in the 17th century.
