Dr Mary Cox's recent book Hunger in War and Peace was featured in The New York Times on 25 December 2019. In the op-ed, Dr Cox (Brasenose College) describes a forgotten Christmas tale from the First World War that stands in sharp contrast to the well-known story of football matches between British and German solders in 1914. After the 11 November 1918 Armistice, US President Woodrow Wilson and Director of the US Food Administration Herbert Hoover tried to convince the Allies to lift the blockade that had produced widespread food shortages in Germany. Despite initial agreement, the other Allied powers insisted on maintaining the blockade until July 1919.
